LinkedIn reaches 50 million users milestone in Asia

The networking site for professionals has crossed the 50 million user base in Asia Pacific, with more than 24 million members in India alone.


Since LinkedIn opened its regional center in Singapore in May 2011, it has crossed 50 million users in Asia-Pacific tripled its user base in less than three years,

According to a report nine countries in Asia-Pacific have more than a million LinkedIn members each, including India with 24 million users, Australia has five million, China has about four million, Indonesia and the Philippines have over two million each, while Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and New Zealand have more than one million users each.

Last year, the user base in the Southeast Asia region increased more than 50 percent to reach over nine million, with more than seven million new members from India alone. LinkedIn sees huge potential in its Asia user base and expects the numbers to grow even more.

The topmost industries represented on the network include IT and services, telecom and banking and financial services. In India, the top industries represented include IT and services, financial services, telecom, computer software and pharmaceuticals.

“Our members represent a broad cross-section of industries across the Asia Pacific region. In particular, the top five industries on LinkedIn are IT & services, telecommunications, oil & energy, banking & financial services, and hospitality. As the region increasingly consolidates its position as a key driver in the global economy, our aim is to help professionals and businesses here become even more successful at what they do,” said Hari V Krishnan, managing director, Asia Pacific and Japan at LinkedIn.

He added that mobile leads the way and the company is now focusing into improving its mobile offerings. Currently LinkedIn offers three apps for consumers- the core app for mobile devices, a professional news app-LinkedIn Pulse and LinkedIn Contacts. The company is also offering better smartphone tools for recruiters. Mobile represents nearly 41 percent of all traffic to LinkedIn and more than 30 percent of LinkedIn job views comes from it.
