The Jan. 29 episode of ‘Arrow’ will be Colton Haynes’ biggest one yet. Not only will he finally begin his vigilante training with the Arrow; he’ll also start down a ‘volatile’ path that might even take him to the dark side! Check out HollywoodLife.com’s eye-opening chat with the actor below.
Arrow star Colton Haynes has already made his mark on the show as the complex, open-hearted, and occasionally volatile Roy Harper, but now that he’s officially training with the Arrow (Stephen Amell), things are going to get a whole lot more difficult for the newly empowered character. Find out what’s coming up in the Jan. 29 episode “Tremors” — and beyond! — below the jump.
‘Arrow”s Colton Haynes: ‘We Don’t Know If [Roy's] Going To Be A Good Guy’
As we saw last week, Oliver finally decided to start taking Roy seriously when he realized that the Miracle serum had given him some pretty intense powers. Now the Arrow will finally take Roy on as his trainee, which Colton says will be an eye-opening experience for Roy.
“This episode is going to be a whirlwind of different un-maskings,” he said. “It’s going to be incredible.”
Un-maskings?! We like the sound of that. Colton obviously couldn’t reveal if and when he’d find out the truth about Oliver, but he did tell us that Roy is going to be a “D or F” student for our hero in the coming weeks.
“He thinks that he’s just going to get to jump into the action right away, because he’s stronger than the Arrow — not mentally stronger, but physically,” he explained. “That’s not the way that it’s going to happen. It’s going to be Roy slapping a bunch of water, feeling like an idiot, and being treated like a child. Roy, of course, is not going to like that very much. Roy is going to start to rebel.”
Sounds like quite the dilemma, but Colton also said that Roy will get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the Arrow on a mission in “Tremors” — and that it definitely won’t go too well.
“I don’t think that Arrow anticipated Roy getting involved in this specific fight with a really strong character,” he said. “Roy gets himself in a little trouble, and kind of confronts the Arrow and says, ‘I’m stronger than you, I don’t really need you. So, what’s it gonna be?’ So it’s a little stand-off, and they’re going to get in a few fights verbally and physically.”
Yikes! Roy acting out isn’t a huge surprise given the Hulk-like demeanor he’s recently acquired, but we were shocked when Colton told us that Roy might not even be a “good guy” anymore when all is said and done. When asked if he’d tried on any vigilante suits — Roy wears them as Speedy, Arsenal, and Red Arrow in the comics — he said no, but mostly because producers haven’t even decided what kind of character Roy Harper is going to morph into!
“There have been some [costume] conversations being thrown around,” Colton revealed. “It’s going to take some time, though. We have to let Roy Harper’s character play out. We don’t even know if he’s going to be a good guy or a bad guy yet. You really have to see how the Miracle serum is going to affect him… I think with his family’s past with drugs, and the way he’s brought up — he has all of the makings of a possible bad guy. But you never know, I think [producers] are leaving that open right now.”
Um, that would be a game-changer, no? Roy turning into a baddie would likely be the death of his relationship with Thea (Willa Holland), who Colton says will already have a really terrible journey over the next few months.
“She’s going to be hit with a bomb — a huge family secret bomb — and that’s going to put her into a really dark downward spiral, that Roy’s only going to add to because her boyfriend is also going insane,” he said.
A huge family secret bomb? Does this mean that Malcom Merlyn (John Barrowman) will be making his triumphant return? God, we hope so.
Colton Haynes: Nudity Is On Its Way
Of course, this being a hot CW actor, we had to ask Colton about Oliver’s infamous salmon ladder — since Stephen has already filmed about a gazillion shirtless scenes on the damn thing, you’d figure Colton would get his shot, right? Well, apparently not. And according to the actor, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
“Thank God it hasn’t happened yet,” he said. “I looked at the preview [for "Tremors"], and it looks like I’m doing the salmon ladder. Luckily I’ve gotten to keep my clothes on [so far]… well, not in the near future, but thus far.”
A million fangirls just squealed in delight. Also, it must be known that Colton will definitely post behind-the-scenes footage of said shirtless salmon-ladder scene once it finally goes down.
