Turns out the Russians CAN throw a killer party! The Winter Olympics officially kicked off in Sochi on Feb. 7 with a rousing opening ceremony. And between the Daft Punk cover, the return of t.A.T.u., and some star-studded appearances, there were a ton of moments that we loved.
We love skiing, the luge, and hockey as much as the next guy, but what really catches our eyes when it comes to the Olympics are the opening and closing ceremonies. As host of the 2014 Winter Olympics, Sochi had to step up big-time to kick things off on Feb. 7 — and they totally came through! Here are our 5 favorite moments from the opening ceremony.

1. All The Things She Said
We loved getting a blast from the past (read: 2002) with the help of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, aka t.A.T.u., who appeared during the ceremony to perform their huge hit “All The Things She Said.” It was also Russian president Vladimir Putin‘s way of expressing acceptance towards homosexuality — a hot-button issue heading into the Games. Unfortunately, t.A.T.u. are only faux lesbians, so the effect wasn’t quite as strong as it could have been.
2. We’re Up All Night To Get Some
We’re pretty sick of hearing “Get Lucky” at this point, but seeing the stoic men of the Russian Police Choir tackle the song at the opening ceremonies was the best thing ever. Who knew those Russian cops could hit the high notes so well!? Their dance moves need some work though.
3. All The Pretty Faces
After watching all the countries make their entrances on Feb. 7, we feel pretty confident declaring that olympians are the hottest freaking people in the universe. There were so many beautiful faces to see, including some recognizable ones like Shaun White, who’s got himself a fancy new haircut. Another friendly face, Maria Sharapova, was also on hand to help her native country light the Olympic flame.
4. All Of The Lights, All Of The Lights
Though the spectacular fireworks show ended in failure when one of the Olympic rings did not unfurl (an error that was oddly edited for NBC’s delayed American broadcast), we’re willing to overlook it, because the light show was so unbelievably stunning. Dancers created an aurora borealis-like wonderland, lights tumbled from the sky like snow, and illuminated horses galloped across the sky. It was like a dream that we never wanted to end.
5. And Finally, Come On Baby Light That Fire
The opening ceremony came to a close — after an amazing couple of hours — when former figure skater Irina Rodnina and former hockey player Vladislav Tretiak carried the Olympic torch for a final stretch, before lighting the massive flame that will burn throughout the games. How fitting.
