Though Jimmy Fallon is getting a promotion — moving from Late Night to The Tonight Show – it’s still been hard for him to say goodbye to his former gig. Feb. 7 was his last night as the host of Late Night, and he went out with a somber, emotional, but also celebratory show — aided by a guest appearance from the Muppets.

In his opening monologue, Jimmy tried to put into words what his last five years as the host of Late Night has meant. He cracked a few jokes — “I’m really gonna miss being on TV at 12:37. I’ll especially miss the battle for late night ratings with my fierce rivals, Craig Ferguson and a veggie chopper infomercial” — but he also got a little serious.
“Most importantly, I want to thank you guys. I want to thank the fans. I can’t believe it,” Jimmy said, getting a little misty. “This didn’t exist five years ago. There was no such thing as this show five years ago. Isn’t that crazy to even believe that? It means the world to me. You make me so happy. Thank you so much.”

To close out the final show, Jimmy enlisted his Muppet friends to help him perform “The Weight” by The Band. It’s a classic song with a positive message about friendship and being comfortable and enjoying life, which seemed like a perfect send-off for Jimmy’s kooky Late Night show. And something about having all the Muppets join him just felt right.
After the song ended, Jimmy walked out of the Late Night studio, and down the hall towards The Tonight Show studio. Just as he opened the door, his entire cast and crew were there to celebrate with him. It was the perfect emotional, funny, and symbolic way to say goodbye to Late Night and hello to The Tonight Show.
